Most of the foods we consume nowadays contain sugar. Some different items cannot taste good without sugar, till we add it. It has become such an integral part of our lives that we can’t even avoid its consumption in many cases. The main function of sugar in our body and metabolism is to provide energy to power our activities.

One teaspoon of sugar is equal to 16 calories. We consume an enormous amount of sugar, whether consciously or not. Sugar it is considered as a largely misunderstood substance because some see it as a poison and others as the sweetest thing on earth. This substance effects in our body in various ways. It plays such an important role in our healthy and unhealthy diets.

  2. Sucrose known as “Table Sugar” and found at table sugar, Sugar Cane, honey.
  3. Fructose known as “Fruit Sugar” and found at fruits, vegetables, honey.
  4. Maltose known as “Malt Sugar” and found at grains, Malt products, some cereals.
  5. Lactose known as “Milk Sugar” and found at milk products.

Refined and Unrefined Sugar

Refined sugar, which is more popular, is white in color. It dissolves easily in liquid. Refining removes sugar canes naturally occurring nutrients: phosphorus, calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium. This type of sugar has longer, shelf life. It is typically found as sucrose that is a combination of glucose and fructose. Unrefined sugar is in golden color. It has a hint of molasses in flavor. This type of sugar has a short shelf life. It is used to sweeten different kinds of cookies and cakes.

Dangerous Side Effects of Sugar

The daily consumption of sugar and in large amounts can give dangerous effects in our body, by increasing the risk of many diseases. Sugar is able to spend the aging process. It suppresses our immunity, raises the level of cholesterol and disturbs mineral balance. This “sweet” substance is able to increase the risk of Alzheimer’s, to weaken eyesight and cause the feeling of anxiety and depression.

If you consume too much sugar you will gain weight and cause obesity. It interferes with absorption of calcium and magnesium. Sugar causes hyperactivity and difficulty in concentrating. Increases the risk of cancer and leads to breast cancer. Sugar consumption is linked to captivities. The bacteria in our mouth are fed on sugar and then produce enamel destroying acid.

Excessive sugar and fat consumption is able to reduce the performance of our brain, especially with memory. These are some important reasons why we should give up on sugar and stay away from it. It destroys our health and can cause dangerous diseases. These harmful effects of sugar will make us quit of it and find some natural ways to sweeten our foods and drinks.

Natural Sweeteners

Natural sweeteners are found in a variety of foods. You can use Molasses instead of sugar. It is a liquid by product of refining sugar, rich in minerals including iron, copper, magnesium, calcium, selenium and vitamin B6. Another natural sugar can be coconut sugar. It is made from the sap of coconut palm trees.

It looks similar to brown sugar and it’s more nutritional than white sugar. This sweetener is rich in zinc, inulin, iron and B vitamins. A good option to sweeten your food might be Stevia leaf. You can grow this plant in your backyard because it is calorie – free and won’t raise your blood sugar. It is an extremely sweet substitute and should be consumed in small amounts.
